Gateway Destinations Introduces Spring and Summer Through European Festivities

Tucson, Arizona – March 27, 2013

Traveling to Europe in the spring and summer months is always exciting because tourists have the opportunity to experience varied cultures through celebrating and observing their traditional festivities. Travel Specialist, Gateway Destinations urges its clients to experience one of the many scheduled festivals this spring and summer 2013.

Europe is renowned for its rich cultural traditions and the festivals honoring those traditions. Midsummer’s Eve is a Scandinavian tradition honoring the summer solstice, when the sun is at its most powerful. This year it begins June 21, 2013 and includes traditional song and dance, the raising of the Maypole and great traditional foods and drink like pickled or smoked herring, and schnapps. The Spanish observe La Feria De Abril (April Fair), which has been a long standing celebration that takes place two weeks after Easter and lasts approximately a week. Travelers can expect to enjoy late nights that include traditional costume, flamenco dancing, horseback processions, and amusement park and bullfighting. This celebration is so popular it can draw close to a million people throughout the week! And don’t forget the daring Festival of San Fermin or Running of the Bulls in July, a Spanish Basque favorite. The Swiss celebrate the onset of spring with fun and colorful parades, with participants adorning traditional as well as innovative costumes.

Hundreds of music festivals can be found in Europe throughout the spring and summer months, but there is more than just music that brings people together. Art festivals including the infamous Cannes International Film Festival located draws huge crowds to this scenic and exclusive coastal area of the French Rivera. Greece boasts one of the most famous theatrical events in Europe, extending from June into August. Each performance is held at an ancient theatre, including the theatre of Delphi and the 2,000 year old Odeon of Herodes Atticus. For the elitists, the Bayreuth Festival in Germany offers exquisite performances of operas composed by Richard Wagner. This festival has been taking place since 1876 and tickets are exceptionally hard to come by, expect about a six to eight year waiting list!

For travelers that are interested in the beauty of native horticulture, spring and summer in Europe offers travelers an exceptional display of flowers. The Netherlands are famous for its tulips and hosts a spectacular tulip festival each year – from April 18 to May 5 in 2013. Feast your eyes on more than 2,000 varieties of tulips during the garden show, take a carriage ride, and enjoy local dining along the way. April is also a great month to travel to France to experience the beauty of pink and white cherry blossoms that are scattered throughout the city of Paris. Provence, France is home to stunning fields of lavender that start to bloom in June and can last into late September.

Travel Specialist, Gateway Destinations, Reveals How to Protect Travelers Driving Abroad

Tucson, Arizona – March 21, 2013

Driving abroad can be fun yet sometimes stressful, and knowing important rules and regulations for each country can be difficult. Gateway Destinations prides itself on creating unforgettable dream vacations to Europe and beyond by preparing comprehensive travel documents before departure and educating clients on proper requirements. Travel Specialist, Jan Acorn, reveals how acquiring something as simple as an International Driving Permit, can assist in a worry-free journey.

According to the National Automobile Club, an International Driving Permit (IDP) provides an official translation of your U.S. driver’s license into nine foreign languages and is acknowledged as valid identification in 174 countries around the world. Obtaining an IDP will help travelers communicate with foreign law enforcement, alleviating suspicions of forgery or possible detainment to investigate the validity of the identification.

“I love to drive in the countryside and small towns in Europe, but having an International Driving Permit makes smart sense to me. It gives me added peace of mind in case something should happen on the road,” suggests Gateway Destinations’ owner, Jan Acorn.

Is the International Driving Permit necessary? Most countries do not require travelers to carry a permit, but it is beneficial to obtain one as a U.S. driver’s license is not a valid international form of identification. Laws in both Italy and Greece require foreign drivers to carry an IDP; however, it is not always a material requirement for car rentals. Countries such as Brazil and Uruguay do not recognize the International Driving Permit. Travelers are advised to check each country’s regulations prior to departure to help ensure a hassle-free adventure.

There are only two organizations authorized to issue an International Driving Permit: the National Automobile Club and the American Automobile Association (AAA). Obtaining an IDP is simple. It costs $15, plus shipping and handling and is valid for a year from the issue date. Travelers must:
• Be 18 years of age or older
• Fill out an application (found online at the above mentioned companies)
• Have a valid U.S. license
• Supply two passport photos

For further information about International Driving Permits, contact Jan Acorn with Gateway Destinations, 520-529-1242. You may also visit their website at https://www.gateway-destinations.com.

Gateway Destinations Promotes Protecting Your Vacation Investment By Purchasing Travel Insurance

Tucson, Arizona – February 25, 2013

Vacations can be a significant financial investment which is why Gateway Destinations informs clients about the benefits of travel insurance to protect their investment, especially when traveling to foreign destinations where personal medical insurance typically does not cover, and Medicare does not. “Remember the slogan – Don’t leave home without it? This is particularly true for vacations. I have seen too many instances where my clients experienced an unexpected event – a missed flight due to weather, illness or injury causing a trip to a local doctor, car accident before leaving home, and a broken bone or sprained ankle due to tripping to name a few – and it was a relief knowing that they had adequate protection to cover the expense and an easy way to handle the situation while traveling” states Jan Acorn, owner of Gateway Destinations.

Travel insurance is primarily intended to cover emergency medical needs while traveling and reimbursement for non-refundable, pre-paid expenses when a trip has to be cancelled or cut short due to covered illness or injury, but often includes other benefits such as lost baggage or a missed flight connection. Insurance companies offer several travel plans to better suit every vacationer’s needs. Premiums vary depending on factors such as cost of the trip, length of the trip, and the traveler’s age or pre-existing conditions.

“It gave me such peace of mind knowing that we had travel insurance when my mother fell and broke her hip in Spain on the second day of our family vacation. We called their international phone number and they helped us make all the arrangements to transport her back to Barcelona to have surgery. It would have been a financial nightmare to not have travel insurance,” recounts one of Gateway Destinations’ clients.

As a custom vacation planner, Gateway Destinations also encourages travelers to do some research with their existing medical coverage. Some credit card and personal health insurance companies may provide some benefits while traveling; however, they may be too limited to provide adequate protection. Knowing the benefits of existing coverage will help vacationers decide what level of travel insurance to purchase, as well as which policy inclusions are needed.

For further information about travel protection coverage, contact Jan Acorn with Gateway Destinations, 520-529-1242. You may also visit their website at https://www.gateway-destinations.com.

Gateway Destinations Reveals How Vacation Photo Albums Have Transformed Through Technology

Tucson, Arizona – January 31, 2013

Traditionally, vacation photo albums or scrapbooks are created after endless hours of compiling photos. The enjoyment of reflecting on the photos is often short-lived as albums are quickly forgotten once placed on a shelf. Physically sharing photos with friends and loved ones often proves difficult because of distance. The internet has dramatically transformed the ability to share savored memories with ease, and in a number of creative ways.

Websites such as Snapfish, Picasa and even Walgreens offer quick and easy photo sharing and album creation from home with a few computer clicks. Photos can be organized by trip, date, destination, event, or genre. Each album can be customized with features such as borders, color preferences, comments, and graphics, resulting in a virtual version or traditional bound album. Additionally, these companies allow for further creative use of photos such as calendars, coffee mug, mouse pads, and other merchandise.

Gateway Destinations introduces MyTravelSite, as an additional way to record precious vacation memories. This free and unique electronic platform is used as a personalized travel website to capture unforgettable moments. Share photos and blog with family and friends via email and social media. Features of the website include:

• Upload photos
• Blog in real time
• Create a travel wish list
• Categorize content by trip
• Search for travel information
• Track your travels worldwide on a map

“My family members have vicariously experienced my travels through the use of MyTravelSite. They can read about my adventures before I even return home,” shared Jan Acorn, owner of Gateway Destinations. Gateway Destinations Introduces Air Travel Tips for the Physically Disabled

Tucson, Arizona – January 30, 2013

Air travel can be stressful due to the large number of travelers and increased security, but it can be especially frustrating for passengers with physical disabilities. Gateway Destinations has compiled some information to help make flying smoother and more relaxing for travelers with special needs, disabilities, and health conditions.

According to the Air Carrier Access Act of 1986 (ACAA), airlines are prohibited to discriminate on the basis of disability and in 2000, the ACAA was further expanded to include foreign airlines that operate within the United States. Following these guidelines, airports should provide services such as:

• Access to parking near the terminal
• Accessible restrooms and drinking fountains
• Medical aid station
• Specific accommodations as needed on an individual basis

Travelers with disabilities may, but are not required to, notify an airline in advance of their intention to travel; however, certain accommodations that require preparation (i.e. using medical oxygen on the plane, connecting to a respirator, etc.) may require 48-hour notification. If passengers opt for aid, specific needs can be arranged while booking the flight or during check-in. Assistance can include seating arrangements on the plane, transportation via wheelchair to/from terminals, and help with baggage collection.

Medical equipment such as crutches, wheelchairs, and canes are all approved equipment to take onboard the plane following security clearance. The flight crew will help stow the equipment in a TSA approved location for the duration of the flight. Medical equipment that must be stowed in the belly of the plane, such as motorized wheelchairs/scooters, take priority over all luggage and they are not counted against the passengers checked luggage.

Please visit the Transportation Security Administration(TSA) website, which includes a list of links that describe what passengers with different disabilities and medical conditions should expect when being screened at the airport. Passengers can also download a Disability Notification Card for Air Travel to help notify airport officials of a specific medical condition.

Gateway Destinations Empowers Women Through Launch of Chairwoman’s Circle

Tucson, Arizona – December 18, 2012

Jan Acorn, owner of Gateway Destinations, serves on the board of the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO), Tucson Chapter and has been a member for over five years. She is very excited to announce the creation of the the Chairwoman’s Circle, an elevated membership level of NAWBO.

The re-design of the Chairwoman’s Circle membership structure was led by Jan Acorn and recently introduced to the Tucson chapter. Its mission is to provide a professional forum where established NAWBO members and executive managers can actively and confidentially exchange ideas and discuss business methods and concerns to advance their skills and promote their effectiveness as leaders in their respective businesses. Small and non-competitive discussion groups (maximum 10 women) allow for active interaction and networking opportunities and confidentiality.

“Since promoting personal growth for women through travel has been a large part of what we offer through Gateway Destinations, I felt strongly that my NAWBO organization needed to provide opportunities and experiences for its members to foster continued personal and professional growth” commented Jan Acorn, the Tucson Chapter’s Board Liaison for the Chairwoman’s Circle. “Similar to the experience women have on our women-only tours in Europe, members of the Chairwoman’s Circle form deep bonds with other like-minded women through dialogue and share experiences in a fun and safe environment” she added.

Gateway Destinations Prepares To Discover The French Basque Region

Tucson, Arizona – November 26, 2012

Gateway Destinations is preparing for the upcoming travels that 2013 will bring! Dates for the Pays Basque & French Pyrénées women-only tour have been finalized and owner, Jan Acorn, is looking forward to personally escorting a small group of ladies through this unique southwest region of France.

The Basque region, tucked between the Atlantic Ocean and the Pyrénées Mountains, is enchantingly different from other parts of France. Travelers will discover structures of white facades with dark wood accents that are the traditional architecture dating back to the 17th and 18th century. Shopping treasures such as colorful local linens can be found in the charming coastal city of St. Jean de Luz, made famous by the marriage of Louis XIV and Maria Teresa in 1660. The rich history of this region continues when visitors explore Biarritz where Napoleon III and his Spanish wife Empress Eugenie built their palace, today a luxurious beachfront hotel.

This fascinating journey continues eastward to the Pyrénées Mountains which is full of history, culture and lush mountainous landscapes. This region boasts prehistoric caves, natural hot springs, mysterious Templar villages and the infamous pilgrimage site of Lourdes. A personal chef will educate travelers about France’s full-bodied regional gastronomy such as foie gras and local cheeses during an informal and interactive cooking class.

“My first visit to the Basque region of France opened my eyes to another dimension of France that I had only dreamed about” mentions Gateway owner, Jan Acorn. “It has a unique charm with different foods, architecture and people that I love to introduce to others, guests rave about the cooking class in the chocolate museum in Biarritz.”

Gateway Destinations Offers Holiday Travel Tips

Tucson, Arizona – August 30, 2012

With the holiday season fast approaching, traveling can be stressful if you are not organized and plan ahead. Gateway Destinations is pleased to share a few travel tips that can help alleviate the stress and guarantee a smooth, enjoyable holiday vacation!

Preparation – Planning ahead is a big key to traveling as stress-free as possible. Begin by planning your trip at your earliest convenience. This will help ensure lower airfare, a preferred airline schedule and desired accommodations. Short on time or ideas? Contact a travel consultant as they can prepare everything for you including flights, car rentals, hotel, excursions, etc. They will also organize all of your travel documents for you, creating peace of mind and a more stress-free travel experience.

Give yourself time – Winter weather can create havoc and cause delays during holiday travel. Allow yourself more time to get to the airport and for connections than you normally would. In states with icy or snowy conditions, allowing plenty of time will help make certain you get to the airport with enough time to check in and proceed through security as airports are busier with increased numbers of travelers. If possible, try to avoid flight connections in cities that often have snow and icy conditions.

Gifts – During Christmas and Hanukah, it is important to remember to pack your gifts unwrapped! Security personnel will often remove and unwrap the gifts for further inspection. Although this high level of security is to ensure the safety of all passengers, it may delay your travel plans and disturb your nicely-wrapped gifts.

Do research – If you are traveling with children, it is recommended that you learn the car safety seat requirements for the area being visited. Obtaining the necessary safety equipment in another state is far easier than in another country, so plan in advance. Laws vary widely by country. There are helpful websites such as Child Car Seats where you can read about the requirements for all countries.

Tucson, Arizona – July 12, 2012

Train travel is being revitalized with exciting new luxury train options by offering vacationers a unique and nostalgic way to travel. Elegant yet vintage décor draws passengers back to a pastime when locomotives were the main form of transportation.

With gas prices increasing, luxury train travel has become a viable and creative way for more people to travel. Passengers have the opportunity to travel through lush, beautiful sceneries that are overlooked by flying, and can relax and spend more quality time together without the hassles and stress of driving. Often thought of as only for the wealthy, more options have become available which fits more travel budgets.

“Our train trip on the Rocky Mountaineer was first class in every way. My wife and I were delighted to discover this new way to vacation as it was a relaxing and comfortable way to enjoy the scenery of this beautiful area of Canada,” offered Jim Susa of Tucson, Arizona.

Luxury trains cover short and long distances and are available on every continent. They range from a scenic one-day ride in New Zealand to covering 6000 miles through Europe to Asia through Siberia. Well-known companies such as the Orient-Express and Royal Scotsman may be familiar to many, but there are a number of other luxury trains as well serving destinations such as South Africa, India, China and beyond. Onboard amenities often include luxurious sleeper cabins, gourmet dining served in elegant settings, 24-hour steward service, en suite washrooms, international electrical sockets, and spa and fitness centers.

Generational Families Take Flight Together

Tucson, Arizona – May 30, 2012

Multi-generational travel is a flourishing trend, announces Gateway Destinations. According to the U.S. Travel Industry Association, it has been estimated that at least 5 million family vacations a year in the United States span three generations.

The Baby Boomers are the driving force behind multi-generational travel. Boomers are healthier, more affluent, living longer than past generations, more educated, and more accustomed to traveling. According to U.S. Trust, they are less concerned with leaving an inheritance, which means Boomers have more disposable income to spend on funding unforgettable family vacations. In short, they value creating memories more than leaving a tangible legacy.

Whether it is to celebrate a milestone birthday, anniversary or wedding or to simply unite the family for precious family time, multi-generational vacations bring together extended families, allowing grandparents to educate loved ones about their rich heritage and sharing new enriching experiences with their children and grandchildren. Adventures such as an African safari, beautiful beach destination, Alaska Cruise, trekking Machu Picchu, or tracing family roots in Europe are sure to excite each generation.

French Basque Country – Europe’s Gateway to the Route to Santiago

Tucson, Arizona – May 3, 2012

Gateway Destinations re-introduces a women-only guided tour to the Basque region of southwestern France. Visit the church where King Louis XIV of France married Maria-Teresa of Spain, a delicious chocolate museum and unusual seaside castle. Explore the inviting surrounding countryside, full of charming villages, sheep farms and hostels where pilgrims cluster along two pilgrimage routes traversing the French Basque region.

Culinary Custom Tour Introduced in the Cotswold Countryside of England

Tucson, Arizona – January 20, 2012

“Formerly specializing in women-only travel tours, Gateway Destinations’ expansion into also offering customized tours in Europe for mixed genders was prompted by an increased interest by both men and women in specialty travel experiences. Some of our married female clients told us that their husbands wanted to join them, so we responded,” stated Jan Acorn, owner of Gateway Destinations. “The appreciation for good food and good wine is shared by many and becoming more important in travel, so a partnership with a popular Tucson chef was formed to create a unique cooking experience in the English countryside,” continued Jan Acorn. Entitled Cooking in the Cotswold’s with Chef Albert Hall, this eight-day custom tour includes not only three cooking classes in an elegant farmhouse kitchen, but also numerous countryside sightseeing excursions including well-known public gardens, Oxford, Stratford-upon-Avon, Blenheim Castle and dinner in a local pub. In addition, “behind-the-scenes” dinners arranged by Chef Albert are included in London for two nights.

“Giving cooking lessons has always been one of my favorite things about being a chef,” reflected Chef Albert Hall. “Rainbow Farm, my sister’s country home in the Cotswold’s of England, is a perfect venue to relax, experiment and enjoy cooking together. This is such a rich area of the English countryside which provides endless places to visit,” added Chef Albert. “Ending our week in London with a personal kitchen tour and dinner in two restaurants gives everyone a taste of the exciting city life as well,” he continued.

Travelers interested in this unique culinary experience may learn more about this specialty custom tour, by visiting Cooking in the Cotswold’s with Chef Albert Hall or contacting Jan Acorn at 888-429-1242.

Women-Only Travel Is On The Rise

Tucson, Arizona – December 31, 2011

Women-only travel is a growing trend within the travel industry, announces Gateway Destinations, with more and more destinations and types of travel being offered in the U.S. and worldwide – from short girlfriend getaways to extended journeys, and luxury to high adventure tours. Many women are venturing out with girlfriends, sisters or as a mother and daughter team. According to the Travel Channel, however, over 32 million American women traveled alone in 2007 and this number continues to grow. Not always having a travel partner, women traveling solo are seeking women-only travel groups to have fun and meet other like-minded women.

Gateway Destinations hosts women-only tours that are intimate, with as few as five women and no more than 14, allowing for flexibility and ease of travel. These affordable, yet informal luxury tours, encourage women to focus on themselves and the activities they most enjoy while feeling safe in an escorted small group. Itineraries are designed to capture the essence of the local culture through a variety of unique activities and exploration with their local bilingual guide.

Gateway Destinations’ owner, Jan Acorn, speaks from personal experience. “Much of my foreign travel over the years has been exploring on my own, with girlfriends or my sister. I found that a lot of women also want to travel, which is why I decided to create and escort women-only journeys. I believe they help build a stronger sense of self, nurture an adventurous spirit, enrich one’s understanding of the world around them, and allow women to express their independence in a fun and safe environment.”

The European countries of France, Italy, and Greece are currently featured venues of Gateway Destinations for women-only travel. Jan Acorn adds “I love sharing Europe’s charm, history and beauty with other women in an extraordinary way with the help of local professionals I have come to know and trust.” Gateway also partners with other women-owned companies to offer additional venues beyond Europe. These inviting venues include a women’s safari in South Africa as well as a unique journey in Peru celebrating women’s influence on the local economy.

Tuscany, Italy, October 5 – 12, 2008

Locally owned Gateway Destinations recently led a women-only luxury tour in Tuscany beginning with a guided tour of Florence. Guests from Tucson and St. Louis joined Gateway owner, Jan Acorn, on this 8-day Chianti Cooking & Tuscany Spa Retreat tour which emphasized cooking regional cuisine with the Tuscan Mammas of Tutti a Tavola cooking school.

From their vineyard farmhouse during the busy grape harvest season, guests enjoyed guided visits to Siena and numerous Tuscan villages, an olive oil tasting, castle tour, market visit and picnic lunch and, of course, wine tasting! This fun-filled week was rounded out in a 5-star thermal spa resort where guests relaxed and enjoyed a natural hot springs pool, spa services, great food and glorious views of the countryside.

Chefs of Tutta a Tavola visited Tucson earlier this year and by popular demand, are returning for one week in March. As on their last visit, they will hold several cooking classes during private in-home dinner parties – all of which are already filled! As a former student in Tuscany and host of one of their previous dinner parties in Tucson, Jan Acorn said “I was excited to recently visit the Tuscan Mammas again and to introduce other women to their delightful personalities and cooking skills in their authentic Chianti kitchens.I look forward to bringing more guests there next year.”

Tuscany Cooking Comes to Tucson

Tucson, Arizona – January 28, 2008

Chefs from the well-known cooking school of Tutti a Tavola from Tuscany, Italy will visit Tucson February 19 – 26. Known affectionately as the Tuscan Mamas, these four lady chefs will share their regional Italian cooking tips during four private in-home dinners in southern Arizona.

Tutti a Tavola, or “Everyone to the table” in Italian, has been teaching how to prepare local dishes for 15 years from the private kitchens of each of the chefs. Chefs Mimma, Franca, Simonetta and Lele have shared cooking techniques and recipes with thousands of visitors over the years, with many returning for follow up visits. At the invitation of two Tucson residents who have thoroughly enjoyed cooking there on several occasions, Nancy Lutz and Harriet Silverman, the Tuscan Mamas are paying a special visit to Tucson before their busy season begins. Four hosts have been invited to open their homes and kitchens in Tucson and Tubac for a fun and delicious evening for 12 lucky guests. Each specially prepared menu will be paired with a variety of Italian wines.

Jan Acorn of Gateway Destinations, who is co-hosting one of the Tucson cooking classes and wine dinners, said “It is such an honor to be a part of this exciting event. These chefs are so widely recognized for their talents and it is great to have them visiting our city.” Jan is offering an 8-day women’s only tour to Tuscany on October 5, 2008. She announced, “The tour includes cooking with Tutti a Tavola. As a special treat, guests will reside three days at one of the chef’s beautiful vineyard homes.”

Since 2001, the chefs of Tutti a Tavola have been invited to share their knowledge of traditional regional Italian dishes at a number of different venues in the United States, Chile, and Australia. They have been featured on NBC’s “Taste of Tuscany” program and highlighted in many newspaper articles around the world.
